1 1/2" would usually be for a wash hand / small basin. sink / bath plug hole strainers. 1 3/4" would usually be for a kitchen sink / bath / shower etc. ideal for fitting in standard plug holes to prevent foreign objects, hair etc from going down the plug hole and causing a blockage.
