Andesite is not marble – Andesite is solidified lava. The rock is formed when magma comes to the earth's surface and cools. In Indonesia, where the volcanoes of the Sunda Islands have been working for thousands of years, it is one of the most common rocks of all - and it creates a stone that is harder than marble, denser than limestone and insensitive to acids. The oval shape was deliberately chosen: it makes the massive character of the volcanic rock appear calmer than an angular pool. The inside of the bowl is polished smooth - dark to anthracite, with occasional lighter inclusions. On the outside, the stone remains roughly hewn.
